Robin Hughes Appointed Dean of the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior

Dr. Robin L. Hughes has been named dean of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, effective August 1.

Hughes comes to SIUE from the Indiana University School of Education, Indianapolis, where she currently serves as professor of higher education and student affairs and professor of urban education. Her training and scholarship has focused on the experiences of student athletes, African American students and faculty; African American students’ success; critical race theory and educational and social settings and more.

“I am looking forward to joining faculty and staff colleagues, and the many students from the wide array of programs housed in the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior,” Hughes said. “I am excited to strengthen existing and establish new, thoughtful connections with P-12 schools, institutions of higher education and organizations that are both unique and critical to the school. I am equally enthusiastic about supporting the continued good work and efforts of such a diverse disciplinary group of experts in their respective fields. I can’t wait to hit the ground running!”

Hughes’ educational experiences have also included serving as principal and co-principal investigator of research grants and fellowships with funding from $15,000 to $650,000. She is co-editor and co-founder of the Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education and the recipient of various professional honors and awards for her teaching and academic service.

Hughes earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.
