Male Students More Likely to Gain Weight in College, Survey Finds

A new survey revealed that males are more likely to gain weight during their first year of college due to high rates of alcohol consumption and upholding an unhealthy diet, according to WTHR.

Around 300 students discussed their dietary habits with researchers. At the beginning of their freshman year, the participant’s weight and body composition were measured. Similar measurements were then noted at the end of the year to draw comparison.

Dr. Daniel Allan, who practices at the Cleveland Clinic, told WTHR that parents should have conversations with their college-bound children about healthy living.

“There’s always time to make corrections, and it really has to start with your diet,” said Allan. “The way you eat is probably going to make or break whether you get the weight off, get healthier, exercise is extremely important, but when it comes to your overall health, the diet is probably the most important.”
