Dr. Jay A. PermanDr. Jay A. Perman, the president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, has been chosen to be the new chancellor of the University System of Maryland, the Baltimore Sun reported.
Perman worked at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine then led the University of Maryland medical school’s pediatrics department. He also served as dean and vice president for clinical affairs at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine until he went back to Maryland to fill the presidency in 2010.
He will be replacing Robert L. Caret, who came under criticism in the aftermath of football player Jordan McNair’s death at the system’s College Park campus. Caret decided not to renew his contract.
It is “difficult to express just how deeply I’ll miss UMB, how much I’ll miss coming to work here every day,” Perman wrote in a statement to the University of Maryland, Baltimore community. “And yet I’m excited for this extraordinary opportunity to lead the System and fulfill what I consider one of my life’s obligations: ensuring that every person who wants a college education is able to access it.”
Perman will begin his new role next summer.
