Diverse: Issues In Higher Education Names Top 100 Minority Associate Degree Producers

FAIRFAX, Va. — In its next edition, November 28, 2019, Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine identifies the Top 100 minority associate degree producers.

The data, compiled exclusively for Diverse by Rhonda V. Sharpe, Ph.D., founder and president of the Women’s Institute for Science, Equity and Race, is the only national report on the ability of U.S. colleges and universities to award associate degrees to African-American, Asian American, Hispanic and Native American students.

In addition, the Diverse Top 100 report is the only national analysis to use the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Education (2017-18 academic year). Using these statistics, Dr. Sharpe has created rankings in the total number of associate degrees awarded at every American institution of higher education as well as specific figures in major fields of study and disciplines. The next edition marks the 28th consecutive year that Diverse (formerly Black Issues In Higher Education) has produced this original research.

Among the notable findings:

  • More than 1 million associate degrees were awarded in the academic year
    2017-18.
  • In 2017-18, 44% of the associate degrees awarded (439,482 degrees) were conferred to minorities, up from 42 percent in 2016-17.
  • More than 50% of all associate degrees conferred by for-profit institutions were conferred to minority students in 2017-18.

Celebrating 35 years, Diverse: Issues In Higher Education is the nation’s only newsmagazine dedicated exclusively to diversity issues in higher education. A comprehensive presentation of Top 100 degree statistics can be found at: http://diverseeducation.com/top100.
