Dr. Darryl J. Pines Named President of University of Maryland



Dr. Darryll J. Pines, dean of the University of Maryland engineering school, was named the institution’s next president on Wednesday, reported The Baltimore Sun.

Pines will assume office July 1, replacing Wallace Loh who has had a controversial 10-year tenure as president of the university.

“I’ve known him (Pines) as an outstanding teacher, a dedicated mentor, a brilliant researcher, and an extraordinary leader,” said chancellor Jay A. Perman, in a press statement.

Pines has an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley as well as master’s and doctoral degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He started at the University of Maryland as an assistant professor in 1995, before becoming dean in 2009.

As president of the University of Maryland, Pines will lead a campus of more than 40,000 students, 10,000 faculty and staff and a $2.1 billion operating budget.
