Angelo State University is set to get its first Black president.
Texas Tech University System Board of Regents on Friday named retired Lt. Gen. Ronnie D. Hawkins Jr. as the sole finalist for the presidency of Angelo State. More than 100 applications were considered for this role in a nationwide search launched in May.
Hawkins is expected to assume office on Aug. 14. He is an alumnus of Angelo State. He earned a bachelor of business administration degree in computer science in 1977. Hawkins served in the U.S. Air Force for 37 years.
“I’d like to congratulate Ronnie on being selected as the sole finalist to become our next president at Angelo State University,” said Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell, chancellor of the Texas Tech University System, in a statement. “Ronnie is a leader of the highest integrity and character who has a proven record of success, visionary leadership and collaboration. I am excited to welcome him and his wife Maria back to their alma mater, and I look forward to great things for [Angelo State] in the years ahead.”
