Mildred “Mit” C. Joyner has been appointed the inaugural John E. & Barbara S. Jacob Distinguished Endowed Professor at Howard University School of Social Work.
Mildred “Mit” C. JoynerIn the role, Joyner, will “develop the first cohort of Howard University Social Work Social Justice (HUSWSJ) fellows. Ten students will be selected to participate in a six-month interactive learning and practice collaboration to conduct research on social work and social justice leadership.
Under the direction of Joyner, fellows will examine current leadership trends and the future of the social work profession’s commitment to social justice at the intersections of equity, anti-racism, social wellbeing, and the social determinants in traditional and nontraditional social work practice settings,” according to Howard officials.
Joyner is president of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), president of the North America Region of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) and creator of MCJ Consultants.
Joyner received emeritus rank from the West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where she was faculty for three decades.
Joyner holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Central State University and a Master of Social Work in planning, policy and administration from the Howard University School of Social Work.
At noon April 21, the School of Social Work will host a virtual conversation featuring civil rights leader and Howard University Board of Trustees Chairman Emeritus Dr. John E. Jacob and Joyner, on the challenges of leadership in addressing U.S. social inequalities.
