Norfolk State University received a $4.5 million Center for Research Excellence in Science and Technology grant from the National Science Foundation to establish the Center for Photonic Materials Research. In announcing the award, Dr. Marie V. McDemmond, the university’s president, said, “This multiyear grant is distinctive in that it allows Norfolk State University to build its excellence in research and affords our students additional opportunities to further develop their scientific skills for the future.”
Jackson State University and California State University were also selected for National Science Foundation awards.
Clark Atlanta University has been awarded a $1.05 million grant from the Lilly Endowment/United Negro College Fund Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program to develop a distance learning center and to enhance computer technology on the campus.
Tuskegee University has received a $1 million commitment from the H. J. Russell Corporation of Atlanta, Ga., to establish the Herman J. Russell Endowed Scholarship Fund that will provide financial support for students in business, engineering, and construction science. Russell, of the Class of 1953, is the first graduate to make a $1 million commitment to the university.
Barber-Scotia College has been awarded a $950,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment/United Negro College Fund Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program. This award will fund the construction of an honors complex with a technologically advanced infrastructure, in addition to providing merit-based scholarships to honor students.
Southern University’s John B. Cade Library has received a $177,900 grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents Support Fund. The grant will be used to provide advanced technology training for faculty to develop online courses.
n South Carolina State University has received $100,000 from Westinghouse Corp. to be applied toward engineering, science, or math needs.
Cleveland State University’s College of Education has been awarded a $53,000 grant to conduct its third annual summer National Youth Sports Program for economically disadvantaged youth ages 10-16.
