Columbia Gorge Community College (Ore.) has received a $1.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor for health care worker training. The grant will help train some 200 health-care workers over the next two years including registered nurses, certified nursing aids and emergency medical technicians.

The Colorado State University System has been awarded $250,000 from the Daniels Fund to provide scholarships for non-traditional students who are at risk of otherwise not being able to afford a college education. The Daniels Fund oversees the Daniels College Prep and Scholarship Program and the Daniels Fund Grants program in Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming and Utah.
The Department of Energy (DOE) awarded seven grants to seven institutions for energy research ranging from $20,000 to $200,000 through the Historically Black Colleges and other Minority Institutions program. The selected universities include Hampton University (Va.), Tuskegee University (Ala.), Morehouse College (Ga.), Florida International University, Prairie View A&M University (Texas), California State University and the University of Texas.

The Hawaii Pacific Islands Campus Compact (HIPICC) administered by the University of Hawaii-Manoa Service-Learning Program, was awarded a three-year education grant totaling $1.2 million by the Corporation for National and Community Service’s Learn and Serve America program. HIPICC will use the funds to promote civic engagement in higher education, including health promotion and disease prevention education; protection and restoration of wildlife, water, land, coastal zones and vegetation; and senior care and citizen education. HIPICC is comprised of college and university presidents. The current membership includes all six universities and 10 community colleges in Hawaii, as well as Guam, American Samoa and Northern Marianas.
