Southern University has revoked 10 degrees following an investigation into a grade-buying scandal, university officials say.
In 2004, the university said that 541 former and current students had been named in the scam. Later, Southern system chancellor Edward Jackson said only 41 possible cheaters had been confirmed, including the 10 who had their degrees revoked.
The university said it has a new system of controls that are reviewed regularly by the registrar’s office, the university’s auditors and an independent auditing firm.
The grade-buying came to light when a student who had enrolled in a Southern advanced-degree program claimed to have graduated with a bachelor’s degree from that same department, which had no record she had ever attended. When she produced paperwork to back up her claim, department officials notified university auditors.
