Dr. Marvalene Hughes, the first female or African-American
to be named president of California State University-Stanislaus, is named president of Dillard University, also making her the Louisiana university’s first female president.
Dr. JoAnn W. Haysbert, provost of Hampton University in Hampton, Va., becomes the first female president of historically Black Langston University and one of only two female presidents of state colleges in Oklahoma.
Twenty-five years after he graduated from the Naval Academy, Navy Capt. Bruce E. Grooms becomes the academy’s first Black commandant of midshipmen, a position similar to the dean of students at a civilian college or university.
Erroll B. Davis Jr. is named chancellor-designate of the University System of Georgia, making him the first African-American to hold that position
