Norfolk State University (Va.) received a $1 million gift from Ernest M. Hodge, founder and co-CEO of March/Hodge Automotive Group and a 1975 alumnus of the university. The gift will establish the Ernest M. Hodge Center for Entrepreneurship in the School of Business.

The University of Arizona has received a $1.4 million grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to expand a program to increase the number of American Indians in the university’s graduate-level science and engineering programs.

The Pfizer Corp. is donating $500,000 to Xavier University of Louisiana to kick off the Xavier-Pfizer Renewal Partnership. The program will use $300,000 to offset the costs of renovating the university’s chemistry and pharmacology buildings and to provide scholarships for students. Pfizer is also donating $200,000 worth of computers and laboratory equipment.

A consortium of four City University of New York colleges has received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide English language skills and job training to immigrants seeking employment in the retail and food industries sector. Kingsborough Community College of Brooklyn, LaGuardia Community College, Borough of Manhattan Community College and the New York City College of Technology will work together to administer the grant, which is expected to serve about 240 immigrant workers.

Morgan State University (Md.) has received a $1 million gift from alumnus Calvin Tyler and his wife, Tina, to establish scholarships for students from the Baltimore area. The grand ballroom of MSU’s Student Life Center will be named after the couple in recognition of their gift.
