Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded $25 million each to Butler University (Ind.) and Purdue University (Ind.) to improve pharmacy education, outreach and research at the two institutions. Butler plans to use the grant to expand its public health initiatives and create more opportunities for students and faculty to work with minority populations. Purdue plans to develop systems that would combat a range of pharmacy-related problems, including medication errors, counterfeit medications and adverse drug reactions.
The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a five-year, $5.5 million
grant to California State University-Northridge, Harvard University, the University of Southern California and the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore national labs to investigate corrosion cracking in certain energy-generating materials. The collaborative effort will focus on creating a computer model to examine the problem. CSU-Northridge has also received a three-year, $328,758 grant from the California Endowment to help fund student internships with community-based mental health organizations. The grant will support the university’s Career Opportunities in Research, a program for undergraduate psychology honors students.
Johnson C. Smith University (N.C.) has received grants from Coca-Cola and the Merancas Foundation to support the university’s Saturday Academy, an outreach program with local elementary schools. Coca-Cola provided a two-year, $50,000 grant, and Merancas Foundation awarded a three-year, $145,000 grant. The funds from Coca-Cola will be used to create a reading comprehension track. The Merancas Foundation grant will fund the complementary Saturday Academy for Talented Males, a boys-only program for students performing at or above grade level.
The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial has received separate
$1 million contributions from CIGNA, Shell Oil Company and the Verizon Foundation to aid in the construction of the memorial on the National Mall. Sony Pictures has also donated 2.5 percent, or $650,000, of the opening weekend gross for its movie “Stomp the Yard,” which opened during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend.
The University of California, San Diego and the University of California, Berkeley will use a $750,000 grant from NASA to conduct a joint experiment aimed at detecting life on Mars. The experiment will be carried out by the European ExoMars rover when it lands on the planet in 2013.
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has received a $113,000 grant from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey to secure a second year of service for the university’s Stroke Education Center.
