Brother of Oklahoma University student who blew himself up guilty of threatening agent

DENVER

The brother of a University of Oklahoma student who blew himself up on campus was convicted Wednesday of threatening an FBI agent.

Thomas Hinrichs, brother of Joel Hinrichs III, 21, was found guilty after a two-day trial, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a statement. Jurors deliberated a half-day before returning the verdict.

Sentencing was scheduled for Oct. 5.

Joel Hinrichs died after a bomb he assembled and placed in a backpack detonated Oct. 1, 2005, near a crowded Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, where the Sooners were playing.

Thomas Hinrichs, 26, of Colorado Springs, was charged last year after with making threats in October and November. The FBI had investigated Thomas Hinrichs as part of a broad probe of what was involved in his brother’s death.

“Justice is done. Threats of violence against public officials are an attack on the public they serve,” U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said in a statement.

Thomas Hinrichs had a rifle, two boxes of ammunition and a military helmet when they arrested him, police said.
