PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A group of 35 graduate students at Brown University have joined together to demand that the Providence school’s administration makes an increased effort to improve race relations on campus. The Providence Journal reports the group, consisting of five graduate student organizations, co-authored a statement released Monday detailing its demands. The statement suggests an increase in the hiring and retention of minority faculty members in addition to requiring in-person “anti-oppression training” for employees. The group’s minimum requirements ask for a written response from President Christina Paxson, Provost Rick Locke, and Graduate School Dean Peter Weber by Nov. 24. A timeline was also offered for meeting the students’ demands. The statement was released after a Dartmouth University student was detained Sunday while attending a conference at Brown for Latino Ivy League students.
