PROVIDENCE, R.I. ― Brown University has finalized a plan aimed at creating a more diverse and inclusive academic community and addressing issues of racism and discrimination.
The plan, called Pathways to Diversity and Inclusion: An Action Plan for Brown University, outlines concrete steps for reaching goals including doubling the number of faculty members and graduate students from minority groups by 2022.
President Christina Paxson says a diverse campus is critical for a vibrant intellectual community.
Paxson unveiled the plan Monday after more than two months of campus-wide discussion. A draft plan was released in November after more than a year of development.
The school says the plan acknowledges that universities including Brown have traditionally failed to fully include minorities.
It’s part of the school’s strategic plan to develop its distinctive academic programs.
