The Community College of Baltimore County has received a $295,328 grant from the Maryland Higher Education Commission to fund an online course aimed at increasing the number of nurses in the state. The new course, which helps paramedics transition into the nursing program, is expected to produce 40 nursing graduates in 2009 and 64 in 2010.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Indian Education has awarded $2.9 million in grants to Diné College, Montana State University, Turtle Mountain Community College, the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Oregon and the University of Utah. The grants are part of the Professional Development Program, which provides funds for training programs for American Indian teachers and administrators.

The Carnegie Corporation has provided a $100,000 grant to Florida State University’s College of Education and the Florida Center for Reading Research to create the FSU Adolescent Literacy Initiative. The program is designed to increase the number of adolescents with reading proficiency.

The PhD Project has received a two-year, $50,000 contribution from Wal-Mart Stores. The grant makes Wal-Mart a co-sponsor of the project, which aims to increase diversity in America’s business schools.

Prince George’s Community College (Md.) has received a $95,200 grant from the Kathy and Jerry Wood Foundation to create a scholarship fund for PGCC students who graduated from high schools in Prince George’s County. The scholarships will provide full tuition and fees for two years to 25 students.

Princeton University (N.J.) has received a $30 million contribution from James S. McDonnell III and his brother, John F. McDonnell, as well as the JSM Charitable Trust, to create the McDonnell Center for Systems Neuroscience. James McDonnell graduated from the university in 1958. John McDonnell graduated in 1960.

Saint Augustine’s College (N.C.) has received a five-year, $437,690 grant from the Virginia-North Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation to increase the number of underrepresented minorities earning degrees in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines. The grant will be split between the Division of Natural Sciences and the Department of Computer Sciences.

The University of Missouri-Columbia has received a $100,000 gift from the Leucadia National Corp. to create the Robert P. Brock Fund in Financial Excellence. Brock, a 1949 graduate of the university, passed away in March. The fund will provide scholarships to students in the College of Business.
