Hood College to Offer Mixed-gender Housing in Fall

FREDERICK, Md. — A Maryland college will allow upperclassmen the option to live in mixed-gender dorms.

The Frederick News-Post reports Hood College students of different genders can live together in pairs at the same dorm rooms inside the school’s three upper-class residence halls starting in fall. Same-gender floors will exist for upperclassmen as well, so students who don’t wish to live with other genders can still have a same-gender roommate. All first-year students will live on same-gender floors.

Matt Troutman, Hood College’s residence life and student conduct director, says the idea was allowed after the students expressed support.

Hood College, which did not admit men until 2002, now joins several other Maryland schools that offer mixed gender housing including Johns Hopkins University, Towson University and University of Maryland, College Park.
