SUNO Cuts Staff, Suspends Athletic Programs
In response to insufficient finances, Southern University at New Orleans — the city’s only historically Black public university — has cut several staff members and has accepted “a significant number” of resignations, reported The New Orleans Advocate. The school, which was placed on probation by its accrediting agency due to its financial struggles, hopes to avoid a second consecutive year of probation.

Higher Education Has Changed. The Law Must Change with It
The Higher Education Act (HEA), the law that helps students finance their postsecondary education, has not been reauthorized since 2008. A lot has changed in the last 11 years, including higher education, and the law that was passed in 2008 is no longer responsive to the challenges facing today’s students.

Board of Trustees Appoints New Paine College President
Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones has been appointed president of Paine College. Jones previously served as provost and vice president of academic affairs of the historically Black Methodist liberal arts college in Augusta, Georgia.
