My doctoral training gave me many things, including the “statistical chops” to analyze cross-sectional, nationally-representative, and complex-sampled survey data from HBCUs with relative ease. But I lacked the practical experience at an HBCU that could enrich my understanding, deepen my perspectives, and connect my interpretations back to the context from which they came.

‘Last Mile Grants’ a Saving Grace for LeMoyne-Owen Students
For Frederick Jones, receiving a “Last Mile” grant to finish his education at LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC) in Memphis was the “ram in the bush.” The senior interdisciplinary studies major received the grant this fall under a new initiative at LOC that aims to support undergraduate seniors who are on track to graduation, but have financial barriers affecting their re-enrollment and completion.

The revival of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program at LeMoyne-Owen College in Tennessee makes the Memphis-based school one of several historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the country that offers students an education and military training to become a commissioned officer in the United States armed forces.

Strayhorn Out as Research Program’s Director at Ohio State
The Ohio State University Center for Higher Education Enterprise (CHEE) quietly updated its website last week, removing Dr. Terrell L. Strayhorn from its “who we are” section. Strayhorn, a well-known academic, was the director of CHEE up until mid-March.
