Rap Music Didn’t Cause Inner-City Violence…Poverty & Broken Homes Did
Hip-hop often faces a substantial amount of blame for the inner-city violence that occurs in communities across the country. This ideology has been perpetuated by politicians, media personalities, journalists and scholars alike. The genre has been heavily scrutinized for its influence and impact on Black youth for decades. The polarizing genre’s criticism dates back to the “Gangsta Rap” protests headed by National Political Congress of Black Women chair C. Delores Tucker, and the mass protests against rap group N.W.A.

Is the Black Man the Bogeyman in the Ivory Tower?
Even after establishing credibility and capability, some Black males in higher education are still likely to face being shelved into stereotypical categories. This creates an uncomfortable equation wherein capable talent must prove to their environments that they are not the bogeyman.

As I sat, looking through a window in a bookstore at a prestigious university, I could not help but notice how monolithic the institution was. It was nothing like how it was advertised on their brochure and website, where they presented a diverse campus filled with people from different racial and cultural backgrounds.

Being a Good Ally
Much has been said about the African-American graduate student at Yale who was reported by a White peer to campus police for napping in a common room. I can identify. In stating my sympathy as an Asian American, however, I appreciate that my circumstances are easier. A good ally takes care to avoid appropriating another person’s suffering.
