Each year the award, named after the first person of color to serve as NASPA president and the first Black administrator at Florida State University, honors a senior student affairs professional or faculty member who has proven a commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion.

Terrell is the subject of a Festschrift — “a time-honored academic tradition that recognizes the retirement of a noted and celebrated scholar by other scholars contributing original work to a volume dedicated to the honoree,” says Dr. Jerlando F. L. Jackson, one of the co-editors of Advancing Equity and Diversity in Student Affairs, the Festschrift in honor of Terrell that was released in 2017.
